In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
